Novus apparatus

The Novus apparatus was designed for use in the Submerged Decompression Chamber and the Surface Decompression Chamber. The equipment is worn on the chest of the diver or attendant and oxygen is supplied by a rubber mouthpiece. To avoid breathing air through the nose a nose clip is also provided. In some case a small mask was used fitting over the nose and mouth. This ori-nasal mask was fitted with a microphone to allow communication with the attendant.

Parts of the Novus apparatus
  1. Mouthpiece
  2. Exhaling valve to air
  3. Exhaling non return valve
  4. Inhaling non return valve
  5. Two way valve
  6. Co 2 absorbent canister
  7. Inhaling breathing bag
  8. Exhaling breathing bag
  9. pressure release valve
  10. Hose to oxygen cylinder
  11. Over the head retaining strap

For the first eight minutes the two way valve (5) is operated in the horizontal position so inhaling from the bag (7) through the non-return valve (4) in the mouth piece. Exhalation is through the mouthpiece non-return valve (3) straight to the atmosphere. The bag is toped up by using the by-pass valve on the reducing valve in the chamber.

After eight minutes the valve (5) is operated in the vertical position and still inhaling as before the exhaled air enters the exhaling bag (8) after passing through the potash canister (6) and back into the inhaling bag. Oxygen supply is maintained by the automatic flow from the reducing valve.

At the end of each decompression stage or at intervals when the breathing bag becomes fully distended the exhale bag is emptied by pressing on it and squeezing the gas out through the release valve (9) . The top-up is then repeated by working the by-pass valve again. . The eliminates the nitrogen being given off by the body and refreshes the oxygen in the system.
